How it works

Most forms of travel, living and consumption contribute, directly or indirectly, to climate change, due to the emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels, as well as other greenhouse gases. See Climate change.

We need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a global basis in order to reduce the effects of global warming. The best way to do this is to reduce your own direct emissions. See What you can do.

For those emissions that remain, you can help by contributing to a project that leads to reduced emissions somewhere else. This is known as "carbon offsetting" or "climate neutralisation". See Climate Neutralisation.

By calculating your emissions on this site, and then paying to offset them, you will be funding the development of renewable energy projects in countries around the world. By displacing fossil-based power plants, these renewable energy projects create very concrete emissions reductions now, as well as reducing the world's dependency on fossil fuels for the future. See How we calculate and Our Projects.
